As with anything surrounded in mystery and magic in New Orleans, the resting place of Marie Laveau, her children (especially the one who also practiced with her and said to look so much like her) as well as other family are always a subject of much creative story-telling ... some based in fact, some in fantasy and imagination. Hence why this crumbling and much more hauntingly beautiful tomb found in St. Louis cemetery is sometimes pointed out as a possible resting place for the great Voodoo Queen. It has more of the mystic and eery look befitting her famous life and times. Others say it is instead possibly the tomb of her daughter who followed her in her pursuits. Then there are those who debunk all this and say it is simply another tomb falling to ruin from time, weather and those eager to tell tall tales or take a piece of history with them. In any case, it is another tomb covered in the Laveau famous Xs and with little mementos left by those wanting wishes granted or to pay respects to Laveau and her family. Enjoy its meloncholy beauty.
The "official" Laveau tomb is also in St. Louis Cemetery. It is stark white and is the Glapion family's burial site as well as that of the famous Voodoo queen. When walking round this cemetery or others in New Orleans I always find it interesting that several tombs look much more like your mind's image of what the tomb of a Voodoo priestess from the 1800s should look like rather than this stark white one. This Laveau tomb photo is also available in the shop.
As to the legend versus Laveau's daily life, one can believe anything in a city where the moss-laden live oaks bow quietly and the Cities of the Dead are so beautiful. It is a mysterious place. I'm sure Marie Laveau took great advantage of this too when dealing with those who called upon her for help. The history of old New Orleans, Voodoo, the Creoles & Catholicism of which Laveau was a part and the mystery surrounding the woman herself all make an interesting story that only enriches the colorful past of a city that steps to a different beat to this day.
