"July of 2012 began with the death of a legend in New Orleans' music. Lionel Batiste was a slight-of-build, 81-year-old bass drummer for the famed Tremé Brass Band & singer. Upon his death numerous Second LInes and celebrations of his life happened all over the city. He was another of the many treasures that make New Orleans so wonderfully unique. Over the years, I have photographed many New Orleans' musicians, bands & personalities like Lionel Batiste as well as music celebrations whether a Second LIne, Mardi Gras or something more informal like someone singing in the Quarter taking tips in his guitar case. Lionel Batiste is memorable not only for his contributions to music through his singing or playing in parades & at clubs but also by always being so gracious & stopping for a photograph wearing a smile & his now-famous watch permanently falling from his hand. He did say he always had time on his hands! Here is one of my fine art photograph favorites honoring him. I shot it last year two weeks after his 81st birthday during Mardi Gras not knowing it would be the last time we met. Rest in peace, old Jazz man."
