A truly unique card created from carnival art from my collection. A parade celebrating the landmarks, people & places that make the Gulf Coast area special gave inspiration to this note card set.
It was a crowning moment in time and much credit goes to the King of Carnival REX for this wonderful tribute that day. Now you can celebrate your love of NOLA and its wonderful spirit with these note cards. Would be a moving piece to frame.
HOW INSPIRATION BECAME A NOTE CARD:
I took this note card's shot during the first Mardi Gras parades after Katrina. At the krewe's appointed time the parade completely stopped to everyone's surprise while the festively dressed members on each REX float raised a sign that said one word...SILENCE. The church bells started ringing at that moment. Amazingly you could hear a pin drop along St. Charles Avenue because no one along the parade route in Uptown New Orleans moved or said a word. It was an amazing moment.
When the maskers raised their signs on the Mississippi artist Walter Anderson's float that happened to stop in front of us, I was taking photographs unaware of what was about to transpire with the lifting of those signs. Once the signs went up we all bowed our heads in prayer & thoughts of all that had happened. I was glad I had captured a bit of such a profound moment in our lives. I had no idea what they'd planned. Out of respect and a need to grieve and pray myself, I put my camera down after that and did not shoot again until the moment of silence was ended and they started rolling nor did I intrude on the personal grief or reflection of those around me during this special time. Since my husband and I had dealt with Katrina and its aftermath in Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi due to living in its path and having property, family and friends scattered along these areas we needed this time of reflection too. As a photographer there are moments you want to capture then there are moments you want to experience. I wanted to be there as part of the crowd on that day. Like many things in New Orleans, grief and celebration go hand in hand. This day was no different. The juxtaposition of "celebrating" Mardi Gras and also grieving at the toll of the bells and moment of silence was not lost on me or others up and down the parade route. It was a touching moment because we were all united in this remembrance. On the neutral ground, on the floats and on the sidewalks there wasn't a dry eye.
I wrote about this day, "Under the moss-covered live oaks...a moment of silence...only the church bells could be heard...for all that was lost...for a day that changed a great city...for the rebirth of New Orleans. Vive la Nouvelle Orléans!" and designed it around the photograph on the folded note card you see in the pics. (Prose, design & photo copyrighted by Renee Dent Blankenship. All Rights Reserved.)
